Barca Champions League 2020

Barcelona's Champions League Journey Ends in a Crushing Defeat to Bayern Munich

Historic Champions League Campaign Concludes at the Quarter-final Stage

Barcelona's hopes of lifting their first European Cup since 2015 were shattered on Friday night as they succumbed to a humiliating 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Played behind closed doors at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, the match was a one-sided affair from the outset. Bayern Munich took the lead through Thomas Müller in the fourth minute and never looked back. Goals from Ivan Perišić, Serge Gnabry, and Joshua Kimmich put the German side 4-1 up at half-time, with Barcelona's only response coming from an own goal from David Alaba.

The second half was even more disastrous for Barcelona. Bayern Munich scored four more goals through Robert Lewandowski, Alphonso Davies, Kimmich again, and Philippe Coutinho, while Barcelona could only muster a consolation goal from Luis Suárez. The 8-2 scoreline is the heaviest defeat Barcelona have suffered in a competitive match since a 12-1 loss to Sevilla in the Copa del Rey in 1940.

The defeat marks the end of a disappointing season for Barcelona, who finished second in La Liga and were knocked out of the Copa del Rey in the semi-finals. The club has now gone five years without winning a major trophy, and the pressure is mounting on manager Quique Setién to deliver success next season.
