Calgary Water Main Break

Critical water main break - June 2024

Updated June 6, 2024 at 12:35 PM

Boil Water Advisory issued for community of Bowness, all of Calgary asked to reduce water use

On the evening of Wednesday, June 5, a critical water main break occurred on the south feeder main, which supplies water to 12 million Calgarians in addition to the nearby municipalities of Chestermere, Okotoks, and Airdrie.

Under normal circumstances, water main breaks are repaired and water is back on within 48 hours. However, this break is more complex and will take longer to fix. We are prioritizing repairs based on factors such as the risk of flooding, the number of people affected, and the availability of alternate water sources.

In the meantime, a Boil Water Advisory has been issued for the community of Bowness. All residents of Bowness are asked to boil their water for at least one minute before drinking, brushing their teeth, or washing dishes. This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

All Calgarians are being asked to reduce their water use by 25% to help conserve water while repairs are underway. This means avoiding non-essential water use, such as watering lawns, washing cars, or filling swimming pools.

We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone affected by the break. We are working hard to restore water service as quickly as possible and will provide updates as they become available.
