Edmonton Man Sentenced in 2021 Daycare Assault
Nine-year Prison Term for Aggravated Assault, Choking
Rockie Rabbit Sentenced
Rockie Rabbit, 31, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for an assault that occurred outside a downtown Edmonton daycare in 2021. Rabbit previously pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and choking with intent.
On Wednesday, Rabbit was also sentenced for breaching his probation and for a robbery in 2022. The charges stem from an incident in which Rabbit slammed a woman to the ground and strangled her outside of the daycare center.
A sentencing hearing began on Thursday for Rabbit. The court heard that Rabbit has a lengthy criminal record, including convictions for robbery, assault, and drug possession.
The Crown prosecutor argued that Rabbit's actions were "violent and unprovoked" and that he should receive a significant prison sentence. The defense lawyer argued that Rabbit is remorseful for his actions and that he has taken steps to address his substance abuse issues.
In his sentencing decision, the judge noted that Rabbit's "violent and predatory behavior" had caused significant harm to the victim. The judge also said that Rabbit's criminal record showed a "pattern of escalating violence."
The judge sentenced Rabbit to nine years in prison for the assault charges and four years for the robbery and breach of conditions. The sentences will be served concurrently.
