Padres Relief Corps Shuts Down Cardinals In The Final Three Innings

PADRES BULLPEN KEEP CARDINALS IN DROUGHT AFTER 7-5 LOSS

Padres Relief Corps Shuts Down Cardinals in the Final Three Innings

The San Diego Padres bullpen kept the St. Louis Cardinals' bats at bay in the final three innings, preserving a 7-5 victory on Friday night at Petco Park.

Padres' Relievers Dominate

After starter Sean Manaea surrendered five runs in 4 1/3 innings, the Padres' bullpen took over and shut down the Cardinals' offense.

  • Tim Hill allowed just one hit in 1 2/3 innings.
  • Nick Martinez struck out four batters in two hitless innings.
  • Luis Garcia earned the save with a perfect ninth inning.

The Cardinals, who entered the game leading the National League in runs scored and batting average, were held to just five hits after the fifth inning.

Manaea's Early Struggles

Manaea, who was making his third start of the season, struggled with his control early on.

He walked four batters in the first two innings and gave up a three-run homer to Nolan Arenado in the second.

Padres' Offense Provides Early Runs

The Padres' offense gave Manaea some early run support, scoring three runs in the first inning off Cardinals' starter Dakota Hudson.

Trent Grisham hit a two-run homer, and Ha-seong Kim added an RBI single.

The Padres added two more runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Jake Cronenworth and an RBI single by Austin Nola.

Cardinals' Rally Falls Short

The Cardinals rallied for two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Paul Goldschmidt and a sacrifice fly by Dylan Carlson.

But the Padres' bullpen held firm in the late innings to secure the victory.

The Padres improved to 11-7 with the win, while the Cardinals dropped to 12-6.
